‘Respect my authoritah!’ was the immortal line uttered by Eric Cartman in Season Two of comedy blockbuster South Park. (Admit it, you read it in his voice.) Like the show, the line has immortally endured, so much so that we are actively quoting it in an article about SEO. One slight adjustment is necessary here, however… ‘Respect my domain authoritah!’
What Is Domain Authority?
If you’re going to respect it, first you have to know what it is.
Domain authority is a search engine ranking score developed by software company Moz. It predicts a website’s ability to rank on search engine results pages (or SERPs for short). The scores range from 1–100, and like any test worth its salt, the higher your score, the more visible your website will be.
Moz takes a few things into consideration to tally up that score, primarily the number of inbound links contained within a website. That’s why you’ll find link-heavy sites like Wikipedia have almost unquestionable domain authority. The score also happens to be logarithmic, which means the higher it is, the harder it is to increase it.

Domain Authority And Blogging
As you might’ve guessed, blogging is one of the single best ways to pump those authority numbers. It provides a platform to consistently create quality content in your industry niche, giving you a prime opportunity to furnish your site with keywords and inbound links.
On top of that, blogging allows you the chance to insert organic long-tail keywords, include quality links, and promote content in the hopes of another site sharing your work and creating even more of those sweet, sweet links.
Be warned, though – to use blogging to improve domain authority, your work has to be on point and SEO-tailored. It’s not enough to fire out 500 words of fluff every few months and hope for the best!

So you want to use SEO to improve domain authority? Well, the good news is, it can be done.
The first step is a good domain name, which you hopefully already have. Second is optimising your on-page content. This is where you might need to outsource and bring in the pros; it can be a tricky one if you don’t know what you’re doing. Titles, tags, image alt tags… All those bad boys need to be optimised!
Next, ensure you have some great linkable content – and while you’re at it, remove any bad or toxic links. Make sure your website is mobile friendly and running at optimum speed (no dilly-dallying with the loading times).
Essentially, good SEO practice is the key to a good domain authority; one should follow the other. Follow these simple steps and soon enough, the entire internet will be respecting your domain authoritah.
